The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice has been recognised as providing exceptional standards of care in a new Healthcare Improvement Scotland report.
The very highest levels of patients’ experience of care at The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow have been commended in a new report by Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS). Staff and volunteers’ commitment to patient care was also recognised for its team approach.
Safe, person-centred care; engaging with stakeholders; and a clear vision and purpose were all awarded the very highest ‘exceptional’ accolades following an unannounced two-day inspection on 6 and 7 July this year, with no requirements or recommendations. The inspection highlighted that patients and families spoke highly of their experiences, and felt involved in planning their care along with effective leadership of the hospice and well-supported staff and volunteers
The focus of HIS inspections is to ensure that independent health services in Scotland are person-centred, safe, well led, and complying with the necessary standards and regulations. HIS evaluates independent health services in Scotland against its Quality Assurance Framework and the National Health Services (Scotland) Act 1978.
The inspectors reported patients and families they spoke to, said:
- 'This is an absolutely amazing place, I never feel pressured to make a decision. I feel fully informed of the plans and treatment available.'
- ‘I can ask questions.’
- 'There is nothing that could be improved on.'
- 'I tease the staff, we have a laugh, they are great.'
The hospice, which has 14 inpatient beds and cares for more than 1200 patients and families every year in patients’ own homes, in the Living Well Hub as outpatients and on the inpatient wards.
Rhona Baillie OBE, Chief Executive of The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice, said: “I am absolutely delighted that the hard work and dedication of our staff and volunteers have been recognised by this inspection. It acknowledges the exceptional standard of care we provide to patients and families every day in the hospice.
“Glasgow’s Hospice provides high-quality clinical, emotional, social, and spiritual care for patients who have a progressive life shortening illness and support for those who care for them.
“Our dedicated and compassionate staff and volunteers work tirelessly to provide truly person-centred care to our patients and their families and I am honoured to be part of such an outstanding team. However, we are never complacent and will continue to strive to improve our services into the future.”
The report concluded: “The environment was modern and bright, clean and well maintained. We saw an ongoing process of open communication between staff and the senior management team. Staff told us they felt valued and supported. Patients and families spoke highly of their experiences and felt involved in planning their care.”
