A Place Where I Feel Comfortable and Welcome

Jean Robertson is 72-years-old and lives in the Southside. Jean had been a regular visitor to the hospice, visiting the café BARGACREE many times.

However, when she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2019, she underwent treatment at the Beatson.  Despite many treatments over these years, Jean’s Consultant eventually spoke with her about palliative care-pain management.

Jean says: Two months ago, my consultant spoke with me about palliative care and pain management. But there is so much more to the care than that.

“I came into the hospice with one of my friends and when we visited the Hub the nurse Carolyn offered to give us a tour and explain more about the services. This really helped my anxiety about coming here.

“This is now my fifth week of coming along, everyone has been so welcoming and I feel so comfortable.

“The activities are great, I’ve tried mindfulness and Reiki which I have really enjoyed, it’s so relaxing.

“I’ve also joined the hospice’s community choir. I’ve always loved to sing; it’s something I shared with my mother. She was a lovely singer, and we would often sing together. But I never had the confidence to sing in public. Until now, and with the support and confidence of the choir, I would say I have found my singing voice.

“It is such a wonderful place with such a calming environment, right from the welcome at the front desk. I look forward to my visits.”
