The world’s leading half marathon, the Great North Run was first staged in 1981 with more than 12,000 people taking part in the 13.1 mile course from Newcastle to South Shields. How things have changed! With around 57,000 runners taking part in 2015, 2016 is set to be even bigger.

Previous runners who have taken part include some of the most famous names in the world of distance running, including Mo Farah, Paula Radcliffe and Haile Gebrselassie.
