Purpose of the role
Community Engagement describes the process of developing good relationships between the Hospice and the communities surrounding it.
By taking a public health approach to palliative and end of life care, the Hospice aims to expand the reach and effectiveness of its services by build a compassionate community where the issues and experiences of death, dying, and bereavement can be explored openly and to discover community responses.
Community Engagement involves respectful dialogue aimed at improving understanding and taking joint, collective actions for change.
Community Engagement and Development Volunteers (CEDV) will support the Hospice with a wide range of activities and events to raise awareness of the work we do in the local community and will also support initiatives that encourage people to become more comfortable talking about their experiences of death, dying, and bereavement.

Activities of the role
- Understanding the importance of confidentiality at all times and maintaining high standards with regard to communicating information in a confidential manner.
- Assist with hosting stalls advertising Hospice services in the community.
- To give presentations to community groups.
- Assist in interviewing local communities about their experiences of death, dying, and bereavement.
- To support the development and delivery of ad-hoc training opportunities in the community around death, dying and bereavement.
Skills & Personal Qualities
- Understanding the importance of confidentiality at all times and maintaining high standards with regard to communicating information in a confidential manner.
- Good communication skills.
- A good listener who is comfortable talking about death.
- Friendly, approachable, emotionally resilient, caring, and tactful.
- Able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Understanding of need for confidentiality.
- Commitment to uphold the Hospice values.
- To take part in training essential for the role.
- To attend and take part in meetings/updates.
Training
Community Engagement and Development Volunteers will receive training and support on:
- Listening and communication skills
- Coping with difficult conversations
- Death, dying, and loss
