Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice

Children and young people support

The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice recognises the support that some children and young people may need when living with a family member with a life-limiting or life-shortening illness, or when dealing with the impact of bereavement.

Our Butterfly Service staff offers support and advice to parents and carers about how best to support their child.

Our team of experienced counsellors and therapists offers one-to-one support for children and young people, support which can take place either here at Glasgow's Hospice or at school.

The Butterfly Bereavement group provides an opportunity to meet with other young people and get involved in activities that can help with loss.

In the bereavement group we make memory jars and frame photos of loved ones, and our doc spot is a safe place to ask questions about illness, death, and dying with our specially trained doctor.

We also host an accompanying adult group that runs at the same time.
This group allows parents and carers to hear about what activities happen in the children and young people sessions, as well as acting as a space for peer support for adults.
In addition this group supports parents and carers by helping them explain serious illness, death and bereavement to their children.
We can also advise on issues related to bereavement and provide support with writing letters, memory boxes, and help facilitate conversations within families.
With a very generous grant from the Big Lottery we will be able to develop our services, in particular for bereaved teenagers and young adults, as well as bereaved parents and carers.
We will also be able to provide support and advice to various health, education, and social care professionals, which will enable them to support the child or young person in their care who is affected by loss.
